Michael Van Bebber


Michael Van Bebber is a trumpeter, teacher and composer based in Seattle. He has performed with many notable jazz artists including: Lee Konitz, Branford Marsalis, Walt Weiskopf Octet, John Pizzarelli, the Woody Herman Band, Chuck Mangione, Jeff Beal, Walter White, John Fedchock, Pat LaBarbara, Marvin Stamm, Bill Dobbins, and many others. Michael completed his doctorate in Jazz Studies from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY, where he was a member of the renowned Eastman Jazz Ensemble.

He has won several awards in classical composition, including the 2004 MACRO Composition/Theory Award, the 2005 CBDNA Wind Ensemble National Composition Competition, the 2005 College Music Society’s International Composition Competition, the 2012-2013 University of Oregon School of Music and Dance Innovation Award (Classical composition commission and honorarium) as well as many other commissions.

He directs two Jazz Bands at Roosevelt High School and has led a “transcription club” since 2011. Van Bebber is currently a regular member of the Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra, the Jay Thomas Sextet, the Jim Knapp Orchestra and the 5th Avenue Theatre pit orchestra, among other ensembles.
