History

Founded in 2008

Jazz Night School was founded by Erik Hanson in 2008, offering individual and group instruction in a supportive and positive environment for musicians of any age. The jazz ensemble was selected as the best way to foster individual and group skill development.

Participants wanted to share what they learned with others in the community to expand awareness of jazz as a living art form, and community performances became an integral feature of the program.

Nonprofit

Jazz Night School grew steadily, adding a variety of ensembles and classes for all levels, and in 2011 our community elected to become a nonprofit organization.

Largest jazz program for all ages

Jazz Night School became our area’s largest jazz program for all ages in 2012, and we’re proud of our participant age range of 10 to 74.

The school has created a community of individuals from throughout the Pacific Northwest (from as far as Yakima, WA) involved in providing and receiving instruction and jazz performance for the community.

A New Home for JNS

In January, 2017, Jazz Night School moved into their new facility at 5415 Rainier Ave S in Hillman City, Seattle. This new place allows for growth potential for the school, with a small performance space, and more opportunities for lessons, ensembles, and classes.
