This ensemble focuses on early traditional jazz (Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton, Duke Ellington) from the 1920s, small group swing (Benny Goodman Sextet, Kansas City Six and Seven, John Kirby Sextet) from the 1930s, and the west coast traditional jazz revival (Lu Watters, Turk Murphy) from the 1940s.

  • Instrumentation may include cornet/trumpet (up to two), clarinet/sax (up to two), trombone, piano, guitar/banjo, string bass/tuba, and drums.
  • Music will be tailored to enrolled personnel and instrumentation
  • Guided rehearsal with individual attention
  • Play in final performance

    The Ensemble is open to players Levels 1-3.

    Student Requirements

    Punctual attendance and desire to learn to play jazz/desire to improve.

    Students supply their instrument.


    Homework is comprised of playing assignments based on the ensemble music and individual needs.

    Ensemble meets 1.5 hours weekly.

    Registration and Payments

    Registration for a small ensemble requires payment in full by the first meeting of a session (unless special arrangements have been made).  Payments can be made by cash, check, or credit card.
