Jazz Night School Winter Session: January 6th - March 16th

Board of Directors

Steve Davies: Steve is an IT Systems consultant, engineer and administrator with decades of experience including significant involvement specifically in the non-profit realm. A lover of both the arts and sciences, in a prior life he spent 25 years designing and building guitars for some of the biggest names in jazz, country and rock. A long-time resident of the Northwest, Steve enjoys building things, fly fishing, and racquetball. He loves playing jazz with others and is fortunate to have joined a community of exceptional fellow musicians to share and spread the joy of this uniquely American art form.

Marianne Gonterman: Marianne recently retired from her position as an Outreach Education program coordinator at Seattle Children’s Hospital where she devoted her career to supporting healthcare providers and families working to improve the lives of children with special healthcare needs. Now she has turned her focus towards spending more time playing piano and immersing herself in jazz. Born in Switzerland, she moved to Seattle in 1976 where she completed her Master’s Degree in Special Education at the University of Washington. Together with her husband Ed she raised two sons who are both avid outdoor enthusiasts and passionate skiers. As a lifelong music lover, she can be frequently seen at jazz concerts throughout the city. Marianne joined JNS in 2013 as a student and continues to enjoy the many wonderful opportunities the school provides to indulge in playing and learning about jazz. She became a member of the JNS Board in October 2016.

Dave Montoure - President: Born and bred in West Seattle, Dave (and his business partner) opened the West 5 Restaurant and Lounge in the West Seattle Junction in 2003. He is an active community leader and has volunteered on boards with the West Seattle Senior Center, Southwest Seattle Historical Society, Southwest District Council and Dining Alliance. He has also served as a Director and President of the West Seattle Junction Association and the West Seattle Chamber of Commerce. He is a vocal advocate for the needs of small business and non-profits and can frequently be found in City Council chambers lobbying for (or against) legislation that has impact on these causes. Dave was recognized by the West Seattle Chamber of Commerce as the "2016 Westsider of the Year".

Monica Munro - Fundraising Chair: Monica is a media designer, working in print, web, and video. She moved to Seattle from Hawaii, where she worked as a video production specialist for the University of Hawaii’s Information Technology Department. From producing live broadcasts on TV to directing interactive Distance Learning classes for grad students, she has worked with a wide variety of media technology. Monica also worked as director and editor for a commercial video company specializing in Japanese programming. Prior to that, she was an event coordinator and stage manager for a corporate entertainment company, whose clients include Fortune 500 companies and hotels. She is excited to draw on her experience and help foster and grow Jazz Night School.

Michael Stout - Secretary: Born and raised in Virginia surrounded by the I-IV-V progression of Appalachian Old Time Dance music, Michael came west to Seattle in 1983. After spending many summers canoeing in Northern Ontario, it was time to try sea kayaking. Between his love of the outdoors and all the region has to offer, Michael was here to stay. He met his wife Ren Dietel, returned to school at Seattle University finishing with a Masters in Teaching degree, and co-authored a book on using the Internet in the classroom at a time when the Internet was still only text. Michael went on to teach middle school Social Studies at The Bush School for many years. As his children grew up, the whole family spent as much time as possible outdoors. They built an off-the-grid ski yurt in Mazama and continue to return to the Boreal forests of Ontario to canoe in the summer months. As life has begun to slow down, Michael has returned to his love of music and has gotten hooked on the ukulele craze. He found JNS in the fall of 2014 and began taking music theory classes and playing with the Gypsy Jazz Ensemble. Michael jumped all the way into the new community and joined the JNS Board in January, 2015.

Jef Veilleux - Treasurer: Jef has over three decades of experience in top-tier U.S. non-profit healthcare systems as a finance executive, and has worked on the east and west coast in Chief Financial Officer roles including Swedish Medical Center in Seattle.  He has retired from healthcare and is now serving as Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Goodwill of the Olympics & Rainier Region – continuing to fulfill his desire to serve the community though non-profit organizations. Having loved music his entire life, it is no surprise that he has found Jazz Night School – first as a student and now as a volunteer board member. Watch for Jef and his band Hilltop Jazz Project which features all JNS students and plays in the Puget Sound area.

Charles Williams - Vice President: Charles has taught, performed and led ensembles of all sizes for over thirty years and has specialized in working with beginning and intermediate students his whole career. Originally from North Carolina, he is retired from public school teaching in the Tacoma area where he led his own popular jazz quartet for decades. Charles is also a saxophone and clarinet instructor, and leads Small Ensembles at JNS.

Warren Wilson: Warren is a writer, editor, and information technology analyst focused on enterprise applications, mobile technologies, and IT for the energy industry. He has been an editor and reporter for several U.S. newspapers, including the Seattle Post-Intelligencer and The Miami Herald.  He has studied classical cello and piano but eventually focused on jazz and the bass. When not playing or listening to jazz, he enjoys hiking, canoeing, kayaking, and fly fishing. He lives in Bellevue with his wife Alison and has two grown children.

Mike Withey: Mike is a trial lawyer in Seattle specializing in accidents, government liability, traumatic brain injury, and constitutional rights and public interest litigation. Mike is passionate about music and can be seen locally co-leading and playing piano with the vibrant Brazilian music group En Canto.

Binah Yeung: Binah is an attorney practicing in commercial litigation and bankruptcy who joined Jazz Night School’s Board of Directors in July, 2016. Binah is originally from Vancouver B.C. but moved to Seattle in 2011 after convincing her husband that Seattle was half-way between Vancouver and his hometown of Los Angeles. Binah is passionate about music, education, and community service, and loves giving her time and energy to these causes. Binah is very grateful to Jazz Night School for connecting her with other musicians and liberating her from the punishment of playing to her own accompaniment on her digital piano. In her free time, Binah also enjoys woodworking and practicing kendo. Binah is very excited to work with Jazz Night School’s amazing board members and staff to keep the program going and growing.
