Understanding harmony is an essential skill for any musician. Harmony is the springboard that elevates melodies to their full emotional potential.
This workshop takes a deep dive into developing an intuitive understanding of harmony. As jazz musicians, we explore the infinite possibilities of melodic lines, we improvise over a wide variety of chord qualities, and we perform music that is supported by the wonderful emotional language of chord progressions (not to mention incredible rhythm and grooves). The deeper our understanding of harmony, the better equipped we are to express ourselves.
We will discuss techniques for playing and improvising over chord progressions intuitively. This is not a music theory class. Instead, we'll look at techniques for learning to hear and feel intervals, stationary chords, and chord progressions. This is about deepening your musical intuition and expanding your musical vocabulary. It's super fun, it's something you can do, and you'll start to hear and play music in ways you may never have before...
As part of the workshop, we'll be using the Harmony Cloud App developed by Clif Swiggett and Stefon Harris
. You do not need to have this app to participate.
This workshop is appropriate for all jazz musicians who want to expand their ears and their emotional connection to the music.
