Jazz education often begins with ear-training and other music-related classes. But applying these skills in a group environment fosters the ability to play with others to gain a sense of time, and interaction – a valuable aspect of jazz music.
The Jazz Night School Jazz Lab allows students who are just beginning to play their instrument or aren’t quite comfortable enough to join a small ensemble, the opportunity to play with others of similar ability in a group setting. Basics such as song form, simple improvisation, and building repertoire are covered.
The Ensemble is open to players Beginning and above for all instruments. Keyboardists and drummers may have to take turns on instruments depending on enrollment. Enrollment is limited to six students per session.
Acoustic piano, drumset, and amps are provided.
Punctual attendance and desire to learn to play jazz/desire to improve.
Homework is comprised of playing assignments based on the ensemble music and individual needs.
Lab meets 1.5 hours weekly.
