The Role of Piano in the Jazz Combo - Level 1,

This class focuses on the core skills of rootless voicings, comping, and improvisation in a group setting with pianist instructor Nelda Swiggett. These skills are mandatory for jazz ensemble playing and this study can potentially serve to advance students in lieu of Level 1 ensembles. 
We will study and practice:
  • Standard rootless voicings for II V I and blues
  • Rhythms for comping
  • Right hand melody improvisation with left hand comping

    Student Requirements

    Punctual attendance and desire to learn to play jazz/desire to improve.


    Homework is comprised of playing assignments based on in-class work.

    Lab meets 1.5 hours weekly.

    Registration for Jazz Piano Lab requires payment in full by the first meeting of a session (unless special arrangements have been made). Payments can be made by cash, check, or credit card.

      This is a 10 week course, meeting online once a week for 90 minutes. Instructors will live stream via Zoom Video Conferencing at the scheduled meeting times. We recognize that there will likely be a learning curve with this technology and will do our best to provide technical support throughout this process.
