Joan Hickey Unspoken Rules of Small Group Playing - June 30, 2018

Class ID:

Joan Hickey Workshop

Saturday, June 30 2018:

10:00 am - 12:00 pm - Unspoken Rules of Small Group Playing

Joan Hickey and Joel Spencer, pianist and drummer from Chicago, will lead a workshop focusing on essentials of small group playing that are implicit and "between the lines" of a lead sheet: Intros, endings, vamps, tags. These performance practices, expected from a jazz player and learned through years of experience, are what make small group jazz playing a unique art form.
A portion of the workshop will be dedicated to ballad playing. Interpretation of the melody, ‘comping, brush playing, transitioning to and from double time feel will be discussed and played. The group will demonstrate and then invite attendants to sing or play with the trio.

Both Joel and Joan are Origin recording artists. They teach at University of Illinois. Joel has played with Sonny Stitt, Chet Baker, Woody Shaw, Wayne Shorter and Barbara Streisand to name a few. Joan has played with Joe Williams, Jon Faddis, Von Freeman, Buster Williams, and Bobby Broom and leads her own trio.
