Singing with Jazz Trio, provides vocalists the opportunity to sing with a live trio in an intimate setting under the guidance of a jazz vocalist instructor. Each student will work on two jazz standards (at least one of which is medium or up-tempo). The class provides the chance to work with accompanying instrumentalists, learning skills such as counting off songs and keeping song form, while growing your vocalist skills. The class also provides the opportunity for qualified instrumentalists to learn to play behind a vocalist.

  • Sing with a rhythm section—weekly
  • Work up songs in a guided rehearsal setting
  • Songs are selected by student
  • Supportive and open to all levels and ages
  • Sing in the final performance

Student Requirements
This class is for students interested in singing jazz styles or, for instrumentalists, playing for vocalists. Vocalists provide combo-appropriate/ready charts for songs (example below). Singers of any level are welcome to join, however it is strongly suggested that new students take Essential Skills and Studies for Jazz Vocalists first (not offered this session). Instrumentalists by audition only.

Students memorize songs and study model recordings.

Classes meet 1.5 hours weekly.

Song Selection Process
Early registration for Singing with Jazz Trio is recommended. Students are required to bring two jazz standards (with charts) with them to the first class. If you’re not sure what you’d like to sing, that can be decided on the first day of class.

Each vocalist sings two songs, one of which must be medium or up-tempo. If vocalists have difficulty selecting songs, we can help.

Class is limited to six vocalists:

Instrumental Seats
Instrumental seats are available to qualified participants (piano, guitar, bass, and drums). This is an excellent opportunity to raise your bar by putting your skills to use in a gig-like setting.
