A critical component in jazz education is developing the ability to play in a small ensemble setting. Participating in a small ensemble is a great experience for developing musicianship skills of playing in time, using dynamics, listening and interacting, all while working on feel, soloing and accompanying.
Playing jazz in small ensembles also develops confidence, collaboration, spontaneity, anticipation, empathy, creativity, working within structure, leading, following, focusing, quick thinking, memorization, and pattern recognition.
