Transcription is the act of memorizing and notating solos and melodies directly from recordings and is probably the most important activity a Jazz musician can do. Transcription requires and encourages the rapid improvement of essential skills, including: memorization, ear-training, rhythmic dictation, vocabulary acquisition, time feel, stylistic vibrato and inflections, tone control and basic understanding of the principles underlying jazz improvisation.
This class will give you concrete techniques to improve all of these skills through choice of transcription, computer programs, practice routines, memorization and ear-training techniques. This is a hands-on course and students will learn through actual transcription of recordings of their choice, presented in class regularly.Student Requirements
