Playing music together!
Beginning level combos at Jazz Night School focus on creating music as an ensemble through a listen-first approach. While written music can be provided, we strive to learn music by ear and by feel. Prior knowledge of music theory is not necessary. Each instructor has years of experience in professional music and brings an educational approach rooted in the tradition of jazz and improvised music.Â
Combos work on a few songs each quarter and develop skills that focus on expressive communication of the music through performance and improvisation. Instructors provide feedback and suggestions for improvement to each combo member at every rehearsal. Each quarter culminates in a performance at a local jazz venue.
Jazz Night School provides placement oversight for all combos, and placement is contingent on availability and enrollment. Skills assessments are required for new students or advancement of level. Learn more about Beginning Combos' songs and goals here.
Important Note Regarding Combo Placement:
Jazz Night School is dedicated to finding the best learning experience for everyone involved. Some of the criteria we consider in determining combo placements include: matching ability levels within groups, compatibility of individuals in the groups (students and instructors), allowing the highest number of students to participate, student availability, and date of registration. Despite our best efforts, there is always a chance that an individual may not be able to be placed in a combo.
Combos at Jazz Night School:Â
- Meet 90 minutes in person once a week for 10 weeks
- Are open to any instrument and range in size from trio to full band with vocals and melody instruments
- Contain only one member per rhythm section instrumentÂ
- Are usually comprised of students with similar skill levels
Our combos provide potential for staying with the same group throughout the year and represent a range of styles.
